Leo Holub, founder of the photography program in the Department of Art and Art History, has photographed more than a hundred famous artists from minimalist painter Agnes Martin to pop artist Roy Lichtenstein. His black-and-white photographs captured artists in their studio, home, or gallery. Holub's calm and engaging persona allowed his famous sitters to relax, which resulted in the creation of revealing and unguarded portraits. His images range from formal poses to candid shots with each image reflecting how the artists wished to be portrayed.
Inspired by a Holub photograph of painter Richard Diebenkorn, Harry W. and Mary Margaret Anderson commissioned this photography project, featuring artists in California, New Mexico, and New York during the 1980s and 1990s. The Anderson's collection comprises hundreds of works of art, with an emphasis on work by late-twentieth-century American artists.
